When it comes to creatives, you need to stay on your feet — evolution-of-bipedalism pun fully intended. Users are savvier and spot ads instantly, and algorithm changes keep pushing creative further into the spotlight. But what exactly has changed, and how do you stay on track? Hop in, buckle up, and let's go.

Creatives Then vs. Now

"We did it exactly like we used to, and it worked great back then" — strike that sentence from your vocabulary. Advertisers who discover one working formula tend to ride that wave until it flattens out, then wonder why their campaigns are tanking.

Especially in the fast-moving world of social performance advertising, you can't rest on old standards or past wins. Why? Because a lot is happening:

Changes at the Platform Level

The first iPhone had a 3.5-inch screen; the smallest iPhone 15 has 6.1 inches. Do the math — a lot more fits on the screen now, which means you can show a lot more of your product or service.

And smartphones aren't just getting bigger — we're glued to them longer, too. People aged 16–29 spend an average of 413 minutes a day online, 177 of them on their phones. So it's only logical that platforms keep shipping new formats, features, and placements, because advertisers are what pay the platforms' bills. On top of that, there's competition from new platforms. It's not just you who can't afford to sleep — the socials can't rest either. And not every platform survives the fight:

So keep your eyes open and check out everything the platforms have to offer! But it's not just the platforms and the tech evolving — users demand ever-new ad formats too.

Changes at the User Level

A big advantage of social ads over other ad formats is that they can blend organically into users' feeds. TV spots, out-of-home, and the like are always instantly recognizable as advertising. UGC and influencer marketing on social broke that pattern — and reshaped creatives in the process. People simply trust influencers and fellow users more than they trust companies with their same old blunt advertising promises. Creative styles became more and more organic as a result. UGC is now an essential factor in the creative game.

And that matters, because nothing is more annoying than a clumsy discount ad interrupting you mid-scroll through your favorite reaction clips. Ads like that just don't hit anymore. But even UGC ads are getting sniffed out by users more often. On TikTok, the trend is moving toward hiring real creators who bring their own organic style and built-in trust — instead of acting out rigid briefings. Add to that the constant stream of new companies jumping into the paid social game and blasting out ads. In short: your ads shouldn't get on users' nerves, and they need to stand out from the crowd. How?

With innovative, genuinely creative creatives — and testing!

Changes at the Campaign Level

The days of granular targeting are over — courtesy of new privacy regulations and algorithm changes. So what's the way to go for your campaigns now? Your creatives find your audience! How does that work? Test creatives with different angles. For that you need more — and above all, variable — creatives. Test motifs, hooks, and formats against each other, iterate on the top performers, and optimize your campaign. That's how we roll!

Bottom Line

In paid social, standing still means you can't stumble — but you're standing still, and you'll get left behind mercilessly. Platforms change, users pay closer attention, and new regulations reshape what targeting can do. Paid social is a fast-moving business that depends on countless factors, but one constant has emerged: in an age where audiovisual media is never more than a reach into your pocket away, creatives play the decisive role in advertising success. Creative, compelling, authentic, fresh — social performance marketing means creative optimization.
